International
Travel Awards for Faculty

Fulbright Scholars

The competitive International Travel Award Program provides assistance to full-time faculty up to $1000 plus a department contribution of a minimum of $500 per academic year to be used towards international research, participation in conferences outside the United States within the participant's professional field, and other scholarly activities.

Once you've finished reading all of the information provided here, please complete the ITA On-Line Application. Applicants must apply for funding by 4:30 PM on the deadline date prior to travel. Retroactive applications will not be accepted. Please upload the following items onto the online application form provided: (1) the official conference participation notice or, if not participating in a conference, a one-page summary of proposed scholary activities (e.g. research, workshops, etc...), and (2) a recommendation letter from your department chair. Only applications submitted using the online form provided will be considered for approval. Upon completing the first page of the application form, you will be prompted to upload the corresponding documents listed above.

ITA Procedures and Guidelines

A COMPLETE SUBMISSION INCLUDES

(1) FILL OUT THE ONLINE APPLICATION

(2) UPLOAD AS AN ATTACHMENT THE OFFICIAL CONFERENCE PARTICIPATION NOTICE OR ONE-PAGE SUMMARY OF PROPOSED SCHOLARY ACTIVITIES AND A RECOMMENDATION LETTER FROM YOUR DEPARTMENT CHAIR

Applications missing any of these elements will be not be reviewed. Faculty may only receive one travel award per academic year.

To receive funding under this competitive program for conferences, applicants must participate officially in the conference they attend, and the conference must take place outside the continental United States. Official participation is defined as:

  • presenting a paper
  • serving as a discussant
  • participating on a panel

To receive funding for research or other scholarly activities, applicants must conduct said activities outside of the continental United States AND demonstrate a need for travel.

Your application must document these activities specifically with an invitation from the conference organizer or sponsoring organization, and/or a one-page summary of the activities to be carried out.
PREFERENCE WILL BE GIVEN TO PROPROSALS WHICH:
  • document commitment of funding from other institutional sources
  • demonstrate a significant impact on the research and academic career of the applicant -- particularly from those with little or no international experience
  • individuals that have not received an ITA award in the past three years

""ITA DEADLINES

    Deadlines for the academic year are as follows:

  • September 30
  • January 31
  • May 31

    Applications must be complete (including all uploaded electronic files). All files must be submitted no later than 4:30 P.M. on the deadline dates. Applicants must apply for funding by a deadline date prior to travel; late applications will not be reviewed and will not receive funding.


    Applicants and their departments will be notified of their acceptance or rejection via email within three weeks of the deadlines listed above. Please do not contact our office to check on your status.

""REIMBURSEMENT PROCEDURES

  • In order to be reimbursed for your travel expenses, once you have received the award and attended your conference, you must submit a brief narrative report of your activities, meetings, and tangible results of your travels to our office within 30 days of your return.
  • ITA recipients will be reimbursed for their travel expenses directly by their department and no longer need to submit their Business Expense Report to the Institute for Global Studies. Upon receipt and review of the faculty travel report by the Director of IGS, the ITA funds will be electronically transferred into a departmental supplemental funds account. The department Chair, secretary and the faculty member will be notified of the transfer via e-mail.
  • Submit one copy of publications, if any, that result from your International Travel Award.
