CNN Newsource is a video and news feed sold to television stations all around the US and the world. It provides many daily feeds of a variety of material useful for newscasts like ours. Students at UD have access to this material by special arrangement.

Newsource has two components:

  1. The video feed - available in the UD TV studio through the rack-mounted router. It can be recorded on any of the recording devices in the studio control room.
  2. The schedule and feed information web site, available from any internet-connected computer. This is where you view lists of information about which news and video will be sent down the video feed at what time of day. You can also retrieve suggested scripts containing substantive information about the video on the feed.

First, consult the web site to see what you'd like to record. There are several general news feeds daily. Generally, the late afternoon and early evening feeds are the most producting for breaking news material. Earlier feeds usually contain features, yesterday's material, sports and entertainment material. To use the Newsource web site:

  1. Click on this CNN Newsource link or enter http://newsource.cnn.com/
  2. Log on using the username and password you receive in class.
  1. From the Newsource home page, click on the
button on the left navigation bar.
  2. On the Universal feed page, you'll see a list of daily feeds like this:
    09-10-04 FRI.0900.FINAL
    09-10-04 FRI.0400.FINAL
    09-09-04 THU.2200.FINAL
    09-09-04 THU.1800.FINAL
    09-09-04 THU.1400.FINAL
    etc.
This format means DATE DAY TIME (in 24-hour clock format) and STATUS (Hints: 1800 = 6:00pm; "EDT" is Eastern Daylight time,"EST" is Eastern Standard Time)
  3. Click on one of the feed links to see the list of "stories" being fed, with short descriptions (called "Slugs")
  4. Note the time at which that item is being fed.
  5. Go to the studio to record the feed at the time you wish to capture the material. (Generally, it's a good idea to record an entire feed, rather than trying to single out just one or two items. technical problems sometimes cause shuffles.)
