Private Support Matters
Tuition and state funding do not cover the costs of educating our students. Every student on our campus benefits from private support.
$1 Million Commitment From Former Faculty Member
The University has received a generous commitment of $1 million from Dr. Donald J. Puglisi, MBNA America Professor Emeritus of Business. This gift will create the Donald J. Puglisi Music Enrichment Fund, which will be used at the discretion of the Chair of the Department of Music to provide resources for a variety of uses, such as undergraduate scholarships, student ensembles, visiting professors, guest artists and instruments.
“I have the utmost respect and admiration for Don Puglisi. His commitment to our students and to our Department of Music is both humbling and inspiring,” says UD President Patrick Harker. “Investing in music is critical. The challenges we face as a society are social and scientific, but they do not stop there. We also face challenges that are cultural and artistic. We are committed to nurturing the next generation of leaders, global citizens whose influence will be felt across a broad range of disciplines. With Don’s support, we can reach for that lofty goal with confidence.”
This gift has a meaningful impact on the College of Arts and Sciences, which houses the Department of Music. “Don’s continued generosity sends a powerful message,” says George Watson, Dean of the College. “It demonstrates Don’s leadership and his belief in the mission of the University. This kind of investment in our students and our programs truly transforms lives and creates significant opportunities. He is an exemplary model for others in our community who want to make a difference."
This is an exciting time for the Department of Music. Home to acclaimed faculty members, talented performers and world-class students, the Department’s performances often sell out. In November of 2010, the University Chorale won three second-place and one third-place awards at the International Tolosa Choral Contest in Spain. Dr. Puglisi’s generosity will help the Department build on this growing momentum.
Paul Head, Chair of the Department of Music, agrees that this gift will have major implications for the programs within his purview. “We are grateful to Don for his generous support because it will allow us to recruit and retain talented students while providing resources and opportunities for them and their professors for years to come. I am confident his generosity will touch many lives!”
Dr. Puglisi, a longtime benefactor of the University, joined the faculty in 1971 and was a beloved member of the Department of Finance, influencing many students who consider him a mentor.
“Music has long been an important part of my life,” says Puglisi. “I hope this gift will help UD attract both music majors and other students interested in participating in UD's outstanding music programs and help those students grow as musicians and as individuals.”
