Celebrating Generosity

University recognizes support of members of Pillars, Signers societies

Many accomplishments and milestones are celebrated with good meals, good wine and good company.  Earlier this month, University of Delaware President Patrick Harker had the opportunity to recognize and celebrate the University's most loyal and generous donors at just such a celebration.

Members of the Pillars and Signers societies gathered in UD's Vita Nova restaurant, which was transformed for the evening with touches of a Tuscan vineyard, for a wine and food pairing event.  The members of these societies have given more than $100,000 to the University throughout their lifetimes.

Wines from the Banfi Castello Vineyard in Montalcino, Italy, were paired with a delicious array of foods, and the guests were led through the various varietals and courses by Joe DiGregorio, the seasoned executive chef and director of education for the University’s Department of Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Management.

The evening was not just an opportunity for DiGregorio to showcase his talents; it was a chance to bring the University’s most dedicated supporters to campus to recognize their commitment and investment in UD’s achievements.

Among those in attendance was Paul Costello, a 1966 graduate of the College of Engineering.  He is enthusiastic about his support of UD, and said he was honored to be recognized for his role as a donor.  “After a lengthy career in industry, I realized how meaningful my experience at UD was.  I had help along the way, and I knew I had the opportunity to help others,” he said.  “It was great to meet the others who are involved like we are, and to feel like we are a significant part of the success of the University.”

Harker shared some of the institution’s recent achievements with the group, and credited the generosity of the Pillars and Signers societies with providing the foundation for the University’s accomplishments. “You are fundamental to our success,” he said.  “We simply couldn’t achieve it without your faith in our priorities, and your fidelity to our cause.  Your philanthropic leadership is transforming this University, and I hope you can see and feel its influence as I can.”

Harker continued, “I speak on behalf of the entire University community when I tell you how profoundly grateful we are for your continued connection with UD and your generous support of our mission.”
