UD students write notes of appreciation to donors of their scholarships
Scholarship donors make a significant investment in the University of Delaware and in hundreds of students each year. They impact the college careers and the lives of students by easing financial strain, recognizing and rewarding excellence and providing powerful incentives for students to succeed.
This year’s scholarship recipients attended the annual Gratitude Gala to honor the generosity of donors in a simple yet profound way – by writing a note to say “thank you.”
More than 600 students crowded into the Trabant University Center last month to write notes that express their gratitude for the support that their scholarships have provided. Because of the generosity of the University’s scholarship donors, the recipients have had life-changing opportunities and eye-opening experiences throughout the course of their education.
The students wrote about several topics: lifelong friendships started at UD, exciting courses that sparked career interests, and, especially, the motivation and determination that receiving a scholarship has awoken within them.
Bill Henry, a senior mechanical engineering major, said, “It is so vital that students like me show their appreciation to the donors who have provided so much. It really makes you think about their generosity and encourages you to work harder.”
In addition to providing students the opportunity to demonstrate their gratitude, this event gives the donors an opportunity to understand the caliber of students they support, and demonstrates that their contributions are benefitting and inspiring future generations.
Karen Aniunas, director of donor relations and special events, commented on the importance of the Gratitude Gala. “There are real people behind these scholarships, and it is important to give students the opportunity to thank them. The process creates a vital connection between donors and recipients, while fostering a sense of gratitude among our students.”
For students like Thomas Benitez, senior finance major, the purpose is clear. “Receiving my scholarship has given me great insight into the impact donors have on students. I am moved and inspired to give back to my community, and I will express my faith in the future by donating and believing.”
