Format of Delivery
Title: Using Nudges and Choice Architecture to Prevent Free Riding and Voluntarily Provide Public Goods

This problem takes the form of two economic experiments and two written responses - one group assignment and one individual assignment. There are readings that may accompany the second writing assignment. Examples of the printed materials used in this problem-based learning exercise are offered in Appendix 1. Successful delivery involves four steps:

  1. Preparation and administration of the class Voluntary Contribution game, which provides participants with an experiential learning opportunity to observe the incentives of free riding and how it leads to suboptimal group outcome.
  2. A group writing exercise where students explore the behavioral foundations of free riding and how individuals in voluntary settings have incentives to avoid contributions to the public goods and how this behavior can lead to significant societal problems.
  3. Preparation and administration of the Choice Architecture experiment, which provides students with an experiential learning opportunity to observe how small changes to the framing of a choice can partially mitigate free writing.
  4. Individual writing assignment on how choice architecture can be designed in the real world to help mitigate free riding and solve societal problems.
