My Research and Expertise

The geology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, and geomorphology of the Holocene Epoch are my current research interests. My specialty base is in the study of sandy coastal plain and lagoon barrier shorelines in Eastern United States, Greece, Turkey, Northwestern United States, and Hawaii. The major contributions from this research interests are in the areas of local relative sea level rise, stratigraphic sequences, and the interpretation of paleogeographies or ancient landforms. Further, my research extends into the basic studies of stratigraphy, sedimentology, and geomorphology from the view of lateral and vertical facies (sedimentary environmental lithosome) relationships. My second area of interest is in archaeological geology. In this field, I have pioneered the technique of using surface distribution of coastal facies units and subsurface stratigraphic sequences in an effort to reconstruct ancient landscapes over the past 5, 000 years as related to archaeological sites and ancient cities.

More specifically, my works have involved the entire coastal Greece with emphasis on the Southwestern and Western Peloponnese, the vicinity of ancient Troy, the delta floodplains of the Meander and Little Meander (Buyuk Menderes and Kucuk Menderes) Rivers in the vicinity of the ancient City of Ephesus. Other studies include detailed Eastern Central Greece, with emphasis on the Great Isthmus Corridor Route as well as the geology and sedimentology of Spherchios River delta-floodplain at Thermopylae, Greece.

I am an experienced petroleum geologist (stratigrapher) having spent 10 years in the petroleum industry in Louisiana, Texas, Arizona, and mostly Alberta, Canada. I am a micropaleontologist with specialization in the study of Ordovician Ostracoda. I am best known for my research on the subject of modern coastal erosion (of the last several hundred years) as contrasted with the nature and evolution of coastlines in the Holocene Epoch of geological time.

Other Expertise:

I am an expert witness in regard to coastal erosion problems and changes of coastal landscape environments.
