What Is Web 2.0?

The Wikipedia defines Web 2.0 as "web development and web design that facilitates interactive information sharing, interoperability, user-centered design and collaboration on the World Wide Web… A Web 2.0 site allows its users to interact with other users or to change website content, in contrast to non-interactive websites where users are limited to the passive viewing of information that is provided to them."

World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee, however, says that the term Web 2.0 is a "piece of jargon." According to Berners-Lee, "Nobody really knows what it means... If Web 2.0 for you is blogs and wikis, then that is people to people. But that was what the Web was supposed to be all along." (developerWorks Interviews, 2006)

However you define it, the goal of this course is to enable you to explore the Web 2.0 technologies, decide which ones are applicable to your work, identify the best examples available for you to employ, implement them at your Web site, reflect on the experience, and share what you learn with your classmates.
