The short story Raining Backwards, which later was followed by a novel
with the same name, describes the feelings and crazy ideas of an elderly
Cuban woman, Nelia. A mother and grandmother, Nelia came to the United
States and settled in the southern part of Florida after the Cuban revolution,
at the end of the 1950's or beginning of the 1960's. She now wants
to go back to Cuba to die and be buried, next to her Cuban relatives, in
Havana. She therefore convinces her grandson to help her build a
boat in order to be able to float the 90 miles back to Cuba. |
