DICTIONARY: You should obtain a good Spanish/ English dictionary.  You will need it to complete reading and writing assignments.

GOALS:  In Spanish 205 we will work on mastering practical spoken Spanish in its cultural context. Our goal is to use the language strategically, to accomplish objectives and resolve conflicts, in culturally accurate circumstances using appropriate vocabulary. In this course, class activities will help you to:

• develop the ability to maintain a conversation, handle common situations in Spanish and negotiate differences of opinion.
• enhance your fluency
• acquire confidence in using your Spanish
• expand your vocabulary
• acquire information about life, problems and current trends in the Hispanic world
• develop sensitivity to Hispanic traditions and customs

GRADING:

Preparation and participation in class discussions	25%
Vocabulary tests and other written work	30%
Group scenarios and conclusions	20%
Taped Role Play Project based on an Escena	25%

Note: Individual improvement will be taken into account in the computation of the final grade and plus/minus grading will be used in assigning the final grade.

	B+ = 87-89	C+ = 77-79	D+ = 67-69	F = 0-59
A  = 93-100	B   = 83-86	C   = 73-76	D   = 63-66
A- = 90-92	B-  = 80-82	C-  = 70-72	D-  = 60-62

ATTENDANCE AND COURSE POLICIES: This is a conversation course. Class attendance and active participation in discussions are integral to the course. Students are expected to attend ALL CLASSES. However, the first three absences from class have no effect on your grade. After the third absence, you will receive a participation grade of "0" for every class you miss. This excludes absences which are due to religious holidays, or to illnesses and accidents that are documented by a letter from your physician. There are no make-ups for unexcused absences.  However, you are responsible for all material covered on days that you are absent.  You should plan on studying approximately two hours per day and on completing all homework assigned by the instructor on time.  Arriving at class on time and participating actively every day are a must.

PREPARATION AND PARTICIPATION IN CLASS DISCUSSIONS: Thorough preparation of all assignments is essential for active participation in class and is expected of all students. Daily in-class participation will be assessed as follows:

A (90’s) - participates actively in class and small group discussions, prepares
              homework, volunteers answers and speaks with few mistakes.

B (80’s) - active participation, prepares homework, volunteers, but makes some
              mistakes.

C (70’s) - answers when called upon, may or may not prepare homework, shows little
              initiative, and makes more frequent mistakes.

D (60’s) - shows no interest in speaking Spanish, does not prepare for class.

VOCUBLARY TESTS AND OTHER WRITTEN WORK: After the completion of one or two chapters, you will be given a written quiz measuring your knowledge of specific vocabulary and information presented in those chapters. The quizzes will consist of multiple choice, fill in the blank, matching, dialog completion and short essay questions.

GROUP CONCLUSIONS/SCENARIOS: For the day on which the Conversación Creadora (CC) is assigned, you should study the Vocabulario Útil (VU) which appears at the end of the chapter, read the Conversación, do the Comprensión section which follows it, and decide which character or characters you wish to portray in class. Grading will be based on your logical conclusion, the amount of new vocabulary used, communication of the message, pronunciation, fluency, and grammatical accuracy.

TAPED ROLE PLAY PROJECT:

• The project involves a dialog between you and another class member based on an Escena found in the textbook.
• The project recording should be at least 10 minutes long and must be accompanied by a transcript (written version of the dialog).
• It may be recorded on audio tape, video tape or recorded digitally and submitted on a CD in MP3, WAV, or MOV file format.
• The project must involve you and another student in the class.
• Each student should participate equally in the project both in creating it and in participating in the dialog.
• The dialog may be read.  However, preferential grading will be given to those projects in which this is not obvious.
• Grading will be based on your ability to communicate the message, your fluency, content, vocabulary, grammatical accuracy, pronunciation, and intonation.
• Students should have chosen a partner and an Escena with which to work by mid-semester.
• The project is due on or before the last day of classes.
