Union Way's Asian Suite for Reading & Writing Japanese

Union Way (http://www.unionway.com) provides a relatively good way to read and write Japanese characters on the Web (Netscape Navigator, Microsoft Internet Explorer), on web--based mailers (Netscape Messenger, Hotmail, etc.), and in standard word processing programs (WordPerfect, Microsoft Word) using a Windows platform. (If you use a Mac, I recommend purchasing the Japanese Language Kit (JLK). You can download Union Way for a sixty-day free evaluation (and easily renew indefinitely). I am told that MIE (Internet Explorer) provides a free plugin that perform similar functions, and I plan to look into this option as well, but, since the University currently supports Netscape in its various computer sites, including the Foreign Language Media Center, for now let's focus on Union Way's product.

Downloading UnionWay AsianSuite 97 and the Japanese TrueType Font

1. Go to http://www.unionway.com/download.htm.

2. Where it says, "Click list box to select the Try Before You Buy product," check "Asian ProPack 97" and click the "Submit Query" button.

3. You will see a "personal product id" like "10000JI01CEPFN5" (it will start with 10000 followed by several alphanumeric characters). Copy this number down on a piece of paper, making sure you distinguish between "zero" and the letter "O". Then click on the "Click to Display Download Sites" phrase.

4. You will see "Welcome to download UnionWay Asian ProPack 97 (5.6MB)" together with "Download: USA" and "Download: Japan". Click on one of these. If you have a 28.8k bps (28,800 bauds per second) modem connection, your download should take perhaps one hour or more, so do it when you don't need to surf the web for any other purpose. Mealtime might be a good time.

5. You will have to save the file "uwcjkpro.exe" to a directory (such as "Temp"). Once the download is finished, if time allows, you might go back to:

and, in the window where you chose Asian ProPack 97, and, instead, select:
"Unicode-based Japanese True Type Font (UWJMG3)" and push "Submit Query" again.

6. This time, you will see, "Welcome to Download UnionWay AsianSuite 97 for 60 Days Free Evaluation". Click on the "Click to Display Download Sites," phrase, and find "Welcome to download UnionWay Japanese True Type Font (19MB)". Click one of the "Download" lines (download time should be faster) and save the file "uwjmg3.exe" in the same directory ("Temp") as the program file.

Now you are ready to install.

7. In Windows, go to the directory where you have saved the files and double click on - the
uwcjkpro.exe file. Follow the instructions. There is no need to install the Chinese and Korean
portions of the program if you are never going to use them.

8. Double click on the green square icon with the yellow key in it, and type in the
“10000" code that you wrote down before. You should end up with a bar with several icons on
it. You can open and close the bar by holding the "Ctrl" key down and pressing the space bar.

9. Close Asian Suite (click on the "X" and then click "OK"), go back to where you loaded the Hoso-Mincho true type font, uwjmg3.exe, and double click on it. Next time you open Asian Suite, the font should be set as the default. (You can check by clicking on the ? icon and checking "Font".)

Goodjob!

Configuring Netscape to Work Optimally with Union Way's Asian Suite 97

(Netscape Communicator, version 4.06, used as example -- this is the version you can download relatively quickly and easily into your own computer from UD's software web site:

It's 15,442kb in size, but the UD download site is faster than going directly to Netscape's corporate site and trying to download ... )

I . Within Netscape, under "View," go to "Encoding."
