The M.A. in Foreign Languages and Pedagogy is a master's program for students preparing to become foreign language teachers. The program combines graduate -level study of the foreign language and literature( French, German, or Spanish) with pedagogical training. The Certification Track requires, in addition, a one semester students teaching placement.
The M.A.F.L.P Certification track program consists of graduate courses (30 credits); student teaching; language proficiency in the target language, English and a second foreign language; and written and oral comprehensive examinations based on the reading lists and class work.
I COURSE WORK
A Foreign language and
Literature
15 credits hours (5 courses)
B Foreign Language Pedagogy
9 credits
hours (3 courses)
Courses
to be taken are FLLT 621 (Methods of teaching Foreign Language), FLLT 622(
Language Syllabus Design), and FLLT 624 (Seeking
language
Testing), unless the students has taken these or essentially identical
courses at the undergraduate level. In this case, other courses
than
can be substituted include FLLT 620 (Interactive language Teaching),
FLLT 623 (Theoretical and Practical Issues in FOreign Language
Pedagogy),
FLLT 629 (Methods of Teaching Foreign/Second Languages in Elementary Schools),
or Summer Institute pedagogy courses (with
varying
topics, typically numbered FLLT 655 or 667).
C Educational Studies
6 credits hours ( 2 courses)
Courses to be taken are EDST 636 (Educational Psychology) and EDDV 612
(Ethnic Studies and Multicultural Education), unless the students
has taken these or essentially identical courses at the undergraduate level.
In this case, other courses that can be taken, to be chosen with the
advice and consent of the student's adviser, include further work
in foreign language and literature, foreign language pedagogy, linguistics,
educational studies, educational development, or English as a second language.
II STUDENT TEACHING
Students must complete a one-semester students teaching placement
(EDDV 400, an undergraduate course of credits) in order to be eligible
for state certification (students who do not student teach may receive
the MAFLP degree but would not be eligible for certification.)
III COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATIONS
Comprehensive examinations consist of three parts : a written examination
of literary knowledge, base don reading lists; an oral examination of
literary knowledge based on reading list and course work and conducted
in in the target language by the French, Spanish, German graduate
faculty; a written examination in foreign language pedagogy, based on a
reading list and a topics list and conducted in English by the foreign
language pedagogy faculty.
Students
who fails one or more parts of the examinations may retake examination
in those areas only once.
IV LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY
In addition to the foreign
language major students must pass a reading examination in a second foreign
language, administered by the department
of foreign language and
literatures. Alternatives to this are : course work in a second foreign
language at the 200 level or above, a passing grade
in foreign language reading
course offered by the department. the requirement is waived if the student's
native language is neither English nor the
language of the major subject.
