MA in FOREIGN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURES

The  MA in Foreign languages and literatures offers three options :

I Single Major (30 credits)

    At least 4 courses (12 credits) in addition  to the core

    At least 2 of these courses (6 credits) must be taken in the major language /literature ; the other courses may be in the major language/literature,
    literary theory, or related areas (including FLL pedagogy).

II Major/Minor (36 credits )

    At lest 6 course (18 credits) in addition to the core

    Of these, at least two courses (6 credits) must be in the major/literature, and at least 3 courses (9 credits ) in the minor.

    In no instance may the student  take more credits outside the departement than in the department in any one semester.

II Double major (42 credits)

    Each major must be in the department and must consist of the core ,i.e., at least 6 course (18 credits).

    The remaining courses may be in one of the major languages/literatures, literary theory, or related areas (including FLL pedagogy)
 

Core Curriculum
At least 6 courses (18 credits) in the literature of the major, chosen with the approval of the advisor and representing as broad a perspective on the major literature as possible.

M.A. Thesis :        Students may choose to write a thesis (six credits)
Major Field  :        French , German, Spanish
Minor Fields: French, German, Spanish Russian, Latin, and Italian literatures, Applied linguistics/pedagogy, and related disciplines

Comprehensive Examinations :

The comprehensives examinations in the students major area or areas have a written as well as an oral portion. The examinations for majors are based on reading lists available from the program advisor.

Students who fail one or more parts of the examination may retake examinations in those areas only once.

For the minor field, there will be no examination, but prior advisement to assure a coherent program is necessary. Students should contact the appropriate minors advisors

Language proficiency:

Proficiency in English and at least two foreign languages are required
