M.A. in Foreign Languages and Pedagogy
This degree permits students to complete all requirements for reciprocal
certification, except for student teaching, in French, German, or
Spanish. It also allows in-service teachers to improve and perfect their
language skills and to keep up to date in pedagogical advances.
Requirements for Admission
The Requirements for admission are:
1) B.A. or equivalent in the target language/literature, or in another
appropriate discipline.
2) Undergraduate minimum Grade Point Average of 2.75 overall, and 3.25
in the proposed M.A. major subject.
3) GRE General Test for all students.
4) TOEFL for international students (550 minimum).
5) A letter of application written in the foreign language.
6) An interview with at least one member of the Foreign Language Education
Committee or delegate conducted at least partially in the target language.
7) Three letters of recommendation.
Admission to the M.A. in Foreign Languages and Literatures is competitive.
Those who meet stated minimum academic requirements are not guaranteed
admission, nor are those who fail to meet one or more requirements
necessarily precluded from admission if they offer other appropriate
strengths.
Requirements for the Degree
Course work consists of 30 credits, including at least 15 in the major
language (French, German, Spanish) and in 9 foreign language pedagogy;
the remaining 6 credits, chosen with the consent of the adviser, can be in
these or closely related fields. Candidates must pass a written and oral
comprehensive examination based on reading lists in the major literature
and in foreign language pedagogy, as well as a reading competency
examination in a second foreign language.
