HONORS Spanish 107 Oral Presentations
Dates: 17 Oct, 19 Oct,
21 Oct and 24 Oct
Goal: Students will
work in pairs to create informative and creative oral presentations on
the
topic described below. Students will use Power Point to deliver their
presentation to the class on the assigned date. Students will also
create handouts for their audience (classmates and professor) which will
contain questions for discussion. Each group will be allotted twenty
(20) minutes to accomplish these tasks.
Creating
Effective Oral Presentations
-
Effective communication (oral and written)
is a fundamental part of all professional disciplines. As a student, you
are preparing yourself for entry into or advancement within a profession.
You are expected to gain and demonstrate not only competence in your chosen
discipline, but the ability to communicate your knowledge, explain your
ideas, and ask incisive questions. Employers consistently rank the ability
to communicate as the number one characteristic they seek when considering
candidates for employment.
-
Speech is one of the three fundamental
communication modes. The ability to communicate through effective speaking
is as important to language skill development as is the ability to write
effectively. Competent, effective speaking is perhaps one of the most useful
skills you can acquire in Spanish class.
-
Preparation is the key to creating
an effective oral presentation.
-
Set a meeting with your partner immediately
to begin the initial planning. Begin to research your topic and decide
what sources are the best. Do not include more than five (5) sources
due to the fact that this presentation is relatively short (10-12 minutes).
Remember to leave time for the discussion (8-10 minutes).
-
Organize your information in a logical way.
Do not copy word for word from your sources, but rather paraphrase.
Use clear, simple sentences. Begin to type your information in Power
Point and always proofread what you have written. Check carefully
the structures (grammar) and spelling. Have a friend proofread everything
before
your presentation day.
-
Find pictures that are clear and decide how
to insert them in your presentation. You must have a picture of the
artist and the painting in focus. Whether you decide to include other
pictures (of other work of this artist, for example) is up to you.
-
The most important preparation factor is to
REHEARSE! You and your partner should have the presentation completed
approximately two (2) weeks prior to your presentation day, and spend these
two weeks rehearsing.

and Strategies for Scientific and Academic Settings"
Notes
on the Topic, "Nuestra Exposición de Arte"
-
Students will be assigned a Hispanic artist
to research and present. They will choose five paintings that they
think best represents this artist's talent. They will describe these
paintings in detail. Then they will allow the class to ask questions.
Finally, they will lead a discussion of the artist and/or painting using
a handout with questions.
-
Your oral presentation must include:
-
the introduction (brief notes about the artist)
-
the body (the paintings)
-
the conclusion (audience involvement - discussion)
-
must provide a handout with questions for
discussion for all class members (make fifteen (15) copies)
-
on this handout you must also include your
"sources cited" list (no more than five sources)
