PLACEMENT POLICY

Students who register for a 100-level German  course are placed 
according to the number of years of previous study.

As a general rule:

  • Students with no knowledge of German at all, or with fewer than two years of high school German or the equivalent are placed in 105.
  • Students with two or three years are placed in 106.
  • Students with more than three years are placed in 107.

Exceptions to this rule are made only upon the recommendation of the 
Foreign Language Placement Advisor:

100-level German courses cannot be taken on a pass/fail basis
if the courses are being used to satisfy a requirement or as
prerequisites of a course used to satisfy a requirement.
