The Archaeological Zone of Sayil is among the most beautiful.  Located south of Merida in what is called the Puuc region, it was home to 10,000 mayas of the Late Classic period (c 900 AD).  Only half of the Castillo has been restored to give us an idea of what it looked like.  As we approach, we can see on the frieze a likeness of the rain god Chaac.
