King Cake
The Feast of the Epiphany, also known as Three Kings' Day, is celebrated on the 6th of January.  It is customary to serve hot chocolate and a special sweet bread at the end of dinner on that day.  Inside the cake is a plastic child.  Whoever gets the piece that has the child will be in charge of giving a party on the 2nd of February.  So, should you get the child...... don't worry!  Guess what day our Farewell Party is scheduled for!

Two of our host families with their host-daughters celebrate 3 Kings' Day together.

Do you remember the big celebration and the king cake in Like Water for Chocolate?  Since the 1990s, numerous bakeries and 3 hotels located on a side street of the Paseo de Montejo have come together to create the biggest king cake ever.  On the evening of the 6th of January, the street between the hotels is closed to traffic and a giant king cake is put together on tables lining the street.  People can buy a cup of hot chocolate and a piece of king cake from the section donated by their favorite bakery. Proceeds go to the poor of Mérida.
