High atop the mountains of Oaxaca sits Monte Albán. According to the Zapotecs, Monte Albán is a sacred place because it is the navel of the world. Two mountain ranges supposedly converge at this site and loop around each other forming a navel. It certainly looks like Monte Alban is a lonely mountaintop in the middle of a valley which is surrounded by mountains. |
