from US to Spain
Dial 011-34-the 9 numbers given to you with your homestay information. All begin with 958
from Spain to the US
  • For the MCI rechargeable, prepaid phone card available at Costco, follow the instructions on the back of the card under "From Overseas":
    • Dial the country specific Toll-Free Number. For Spain it is 800-099-357
    • Enter World Service Call. This is printed on the card. It is a 2 or 3 digit number.
    • Enter Pin #. This is the same pin number which appears on the instructions "from USA to dial or recharge"
    • Dial the number you are calling in the US exactly as you dial a long distance number in the US. (ie: 1-302-831-2758)
  • The charge is 54 cents a minute from Spain to the US using this particular MCI card. I have used this card to call US from Costa Rica and Mexico and have experienced no problems whatsoever. As long as you have a credit card, you can recharge the card and use it indefinitely. Other than a 30 cent surcharge when using a phublic phone, this card has no extra fees (connection fees, weekly fees, expiration date, etc.) It is cheaper than the one offered by MCI to its home service customers!
  • Other cards have different Country Specific Toll-Free Numbers, access codes and rates.
  • Check with the phone service you use at home. They often offer cards of their own. CHECK RATES--your home phone service may not be the cheapest. To place a direct call to the US from Spain you must dial 00-1-(area code)-seven digit number (i.e. 011-1-302-2831-2758)
  • e-mail
  • This should be the cheapest way to keep in touch. There are many cybercafes that charge by the minute.
  • You can use your aol, hotmail, yahoo (and many other such acounts) when in Spain without a problem. You can have your UD mail forwarded to those accounts by going to http://www.udel.edu/network. This way you won't have to create new address books or send out messages to everyone about your new e-mail address.
  • UD's webmail. UD created a webmail service that would allow anyone having an e-mail account with UD to access the account from anywhere in the world. It seems this service has not been working as expected and will be discontinued.
  • Instant Messaging
The professors and graduate students from Spain who have stayed in my home have communicated with their loved ones in Spain through their hotmail account MSN instant messaging. After signing up for the service and specifying who you will accept messages from, you just need to agree on a date and time to be on the computer. Remember that it is six hours later in the day in Spain than it is here in Delaware.
