ANCIENT GREEK AND ROMAN STUDIES
MAJORS AND MINORS

Ancient Languages*
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures administers major programs in Ancient Greek and Roman Studies (see curriculum below), Latin Education and Latin Education with a Classics concentration as well as an Ancient Greek and Roman Studies Minor that (in Fall 2004) will replace the minor in Classics.  Honors Degree programs are also available. Additionally,  students can pursue a joint major in History and Classics.  This major is intended to accommodate students who wish to combine the study of history with that of Classics.  The major calls for a total of 42 credits, 24 from the History Department, and 18 at the 200 level or above in Classics. For specific requirements, see the Undergraduate Catalog.

Ancient Greek and Roman Studies, our most popular major, is particularly well suited to students with a range of interests, and it provides them with exposure to a wide variety of disciplines, as wide as they chose. This major concentration is at once structured and extremely flexible as it allows students to tailor their curriculum to their particular interests.  Ancient Greek and Roman Studies offers students three distinct options

Option I:  Civilization and Culture

Option II: Greek and Latin Language and Literature

Option III: Latin Language and Literature

While all three options are built on a core of general literature and culture courses, Option I is the most interdisciplinary and requires the study of language only to the level stipulated by the University of Delaware Language Requirement. Students pursuing Option I will get a taste of Greek and/or Latin language and literature while simultaneously experiencing courses in related areas, anthropology, art history, history, philosophy, political science, and theater included.  Option II (Greek and Latin Language and Literature) is more focused on Greek and Latin language and literature than Option I. Students pursuing Option II can expect to read classic works such as Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey, Virgil’s Aeneid, Herodotus’ Histories, Euripides’ Medea, and Ovid’s Metamorphoses in the original languages. Option III (Latin Language and Literature) is much like Option II but is best suited to students most interested in the language, literature, and culture of ancient Rome.

Courses required for all options are listed in the program description and curriculum outline below. If you have any questions, contact Dr. Annette Giesecke : alg@udel.edu.
