American Literature
Modern Literature
The common theme running through contemporary, popular fiction in the U.S. is entertainment. The following authors either have their own radio/TV show or have their books turned into TV shows or movies. It is sometimes difficult to say whether these people are known because of their writing abilities or because of the plots they provide for popular movies. These authors have a faithful following of readers and their subject matter deals with current issues and themes. This selection of authors is a good representation of American tastes and values. Whether people read for entertainment, information, or an escape from their own lives, these authors continue to please their readers.

Classic Literature
Classic authors are still very popular here in America. Most of us were first exposed to them in high school English and Drama classes and then again in college English classes. Shakespeare, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edgar Allan Poe, Henry David Thoreau, Dostievsky, and Herman Melville's works are still regarded with high esteem. The issues covered in these books can still be related to today's society.Children's Literature
Authors like Dr. Seuss and A.A. Milne continue to provide entertainment well past childhood. Dr. Seuss' rhyming style lends itself to such books like The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, and The Grinch Who Stole Christmas. A.A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh is also popular well past childhood. Pooh has also crossed into fashion and can be seen with his friends, Tigger, Eeyore, and Piglet, on every type of clothing imagineable.
