Students are involved in a broad range of areas in the fashion industry including positions in design, product development, buying, retailing, public relations, fashion publications and media, and visual merchandising, Internships during the summer and winter sessions offer students unique field experiences with direct learning from industry professionals and valuable networking opportunities. Students commonly complete internships with two or more companies prior to graduation and are able to build competitive resumes based on their industry experience.
The department provides support for acquiring internship positions through the Career Services Center, fashion job fair events, and on-campus visits by industry professionals and recruiters, and an active network of enthusiastic alums. An internship course is offered to provide support for companies and students. For questions concerning the fashion internship course, view the FAQ page.
Hong Kong Internship Program
Since the summer of, 2010, the UD Department of Fashion and Apparel studies has been offering unpaid fashion-related internships in Hong Kong for UD undergraduate majors interested in an experiential learning opportunity with companies operating in Hong Kong. In partnership with Phi Beta Asia Programs, Stephen Pattillo works with UD faculty to identify companies interested in hosting an intern in Hong Kong from June 8 - July 26, 2010. Phi Beta Asia Programs handles the arrangement of the student travel to Hong Kong, orientation to Hong Kong as a city and its public transport system, and arranges accommodations for students in apartments for the June/July program. Students earn UD credit for completing the internship.
Students gain professional business experience in Asia's Fashion Center by participating in a summer internship experience in the fashion capital of Asia. The internship is an unpaid training position that allows students to gain hands-on experience in a fashion workplace environment. The internship will provide practical experience to enhance students’ on-campus learning. This study abroad course is an off-campus supervised and coordinated field study program in the fashion and related industries in Hong Kong. The primary goal of this course is to enhance student learning through firsthand knowledge of the global apparel business environment in Hong Kong. Through this course, students will be able to broaden their understanding of the international fashion business environment and apply their knowledge within a field experience setting. Instructors will provide one-on-one guidance through initial meetings on campus in Newark and via e-mail, Skype, and Sakai while students are abroad.
Drawing on their extensive network of partner organizations, Phi Beta Dingo Pty. Ltd. places students in some of Hong Kong's well known multinational corporations, small and medium-sized businesses, government bodies, nonprofit organizations and community service organizations. Phi Beta Asia Programs handles orientation to Hong Kong as a city and its public transport system, and arranges accommodations for students in apartments for the summer programs. A local representative of Phi Beta Dingo serves as the students' contact while in Hong Kong and assist with any problems or questions that may arise.
Preference is be given to students majoring in Fashion and Apparel Studies with a demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in the fashion industry after graduation.
