a. Rationale
for creation, revision, or deletion:
Teaching
Certification in Higher Education will bring our institution in line with
current developments in the field and respond to a deep-felt need by our
graduate students. The program is open to all graduate students and is designed
not to interfere with the graduate students’ main program of study. Given the
great potential of this program and minimal cost to the University, it is a
viable and valuable addition to the University’s graduate program.
b. Summary
of program:
Teaching Certification in Higher Education will
assist graduate students to develop the skills required to teach in new ways by
introducing them to current issues and arguments in the fields of teaching and
learning. The pillars of this program are: Research (on learning and
teaching), Application (of learning theory on concrete learning
environments), and Reflection (on the effectiveness of the emerging
pedagogical skills). By participating in the diverse modules of the program,
graduate students will familiarize themselves with current pedagogical views
and research, reflect on their own teaching praxis (and that of experienced
colleagues and mentors), conduct peer consultations, participate in
professional seminars, and document their teaching effectiveness through
professional portfolios. Completion of all program requirements will be a clear
indication of the graduate students’ commitment to excellence in teaching, as
well as a testimony of his/her pedagogical accomplishments.
