Graduate Studies Senate Committee Meeting

Absent: Ali Poorani, HP; Susan Brynteson, LIB; Paula Vasquez, Grad Student
The meeting was called to order by Charles Mason, Chair. As there are 5 new Committee members, introductions were given.
The Agenda Items were discussed as follows:
1) Revisions to the Comprehensive Examination
Procedures in the Ph.D. program of Art History:
The Committee approved in principle the changes in the program’s
procedures for the major and minor examinations. The Committee requested a rewording of the first paragraph of the section
labeled “Comprehensive Examinations revised
2) John McDonald, Chair of the Biological Science Graduate Committee, presented the rationale for the changes in program requirements and procedures for the Biological Ph.D. program. The Committee approved the document with the understanding that a statement would be added as to the responsibility of the student to acquire an advisor by the end of their second semester or face a recommendation for dismissal from the program. A follow up report will be given to the Committee at the next meeting.
3) The Master’s of Science program in Health Promotion is to be reviewed for permanent status by the Senate this year. The report to the Senate was provided to the Committee. The Committee suggested that the Director of the Program include information about the graduates of the Program in the report.
4) The Committee discussed the proposal for the change in the name of the Energy and Environmental Policy concentration in the M.A. program in Urban Affairs and Public Policy. The Committee tabled the review and requested that a member of that program attend the next meeting of the Committee to discuss the meaning of “Equity” in the proposed title.
