Rationale:

(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the curriculum or program.)

The Department of Geology formally moves to the College of Marine Studies on July 1, 2006. With Geology, the College of Marine Studies will have a broader ‘earth’ emphasis in research and education than is reflected in the current name of the college.  That broader emphasis needs to be recognized in order to effectively recruit students and faculty.

Therefore, it is the unanimous request of the faculty of the College of Marine Studies and the faculty of the Department of Geology that the name of the college be changed from “College of Marine Studies” to “College of Marine and Earth Studies”.

The new name takes advantage of the reputation and history of CMS while also clearly highlighting the change that will occur as the Department of Geology joins the College.  The decision to use the word ‘Earth’ instead of ‘Geology’ reflects the fact that ‘Earth’ is replacing the word ‘Geology’ in academic units around the country.  This is because Geology is traditionally associated with mining and petroleum exploration.  The use of the word ‘Earth’ in the title is meant to convey the Earth System.  It is not meant to include ‘soil’.  Many of the programs we examined had separate departments that housed soil science.  Thus, there is ample precedent for such a name in programs of similar stature where other programs are clustered with marine studies.
