Re: Department Merger
Date: November 27, 2002
Following approximately a year of discussion and planning, and with the approval of Dean Betty Paulanka, the departments of Health and Exercise Sciences and Nutrition and Dietetics have formally voted to merge into a single department, to be called the Department of Health, Nutrition, and Exercise Sciences, effective July 1, 2003. Copies of the minutes of the respective department meetings at which these votes were taken are attached.
This consolidation is in keeping with a national trend and driven by increasing awareness that exercise and nutrition are interrelated components of lifestyle. Increasingly, it is essential that students preparing for careers in the health arena be knowledgeable about both exercise and nutrition. Similarly, federal funding opportunities for research are increasingly available for projects encompassing both activity and diet interventions.
Accordingly, we present this plan for the merger of these two departments to the Faculty Senate as an announcement for challenge.
