Introduction

This document is intended to clarify and simplify the previously submitted proposals for the addition of optional concentrations to the majors in Applied Nutrition, Dietetics, and Nutritional Sciences. What follows entails no change in substance to the previously submitted proposals. Implementation of these optional concentrations for students is also not linked to any change in the majors.

Rationale for Addition of Concentrations

The department has offered an optional package of courses labeled a “focus” in the areas of “Fitness,” “Gerontology,” and “Pediatrics” for students majoring in Applied Nutrition, Dietetics, and Nutritional Sciences for many years. An optional “focus” in “Foodservice Management” has also been offered for the Applied Nutrition and Dietetics majors, but not the Dietetics major, because too many of the Foodservice Management courses were already required in the Dietetics major.

We are proposing to formalize these focus areas as optional concentrations in “Health and Exercise,” “Gerontology,” “Pediatrics,” and “Foodservice Management” so that these labeled sets of defined courses will be recorded on students’ transcripts. In keeping with current demographic and health-related trends, we are also proposing a new optional concentration to be available to all three majors in “Weight Management.”
