a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or deletion:

The Material Science Department, based upon comparison with nearby competitive institutions and upon agreement of all Chairpersons and the Dean in the College of Engineering, changed their MSEG302 Materials Science for Engineers course from a 4 credit (3 credits lecture + 1 credit lab) lecture plus lab course to a 3 credit lecture-only course. The course change will take effect Spring 2004; they have agreed to offer a one-credit MSEG367 course during Spring 2004 to the current ME sophomores to fulfill their ME Program requirement of 122 credits.

Because of accreditation issues for our program, the Mechanical Engineering Department has voted to retain a more practical experience (the lab part of the old MSEG302) in our curriculum and to keep our program at 122 credits. This will be done by introducing a new one-credit course MEEG102, Introduction to Mechanical Engineering Labs, during the 1S semester. The course can also continue the introduction of the ME program/department to the students. This will increase the second-semester credits for freshman from 14 to 15 and decrease the second-semester credits for sophomores from 17 to 16.

Included below for informational purposes is the new course approval information which has been entered into the course-approval process for the current cycle:

****************************

The ME Department needs to formally address the change of MSEG302 from four credits/with a lab - to three credits/no lab.

MEEG102, Introduction to Mechanical Engineering Labs, 1 credit, lecture & lab/demo:

Introduce lab techniques and procedures focusing upon data acquisition and data reporting; also introduces mechanical engineering disciplines.

A general outline of the course -

1) introduce labs

   a) lab reports

   b) data acquisition

      i) error analysis

      ii) appropriate statistics

2) introduce ME disciplines; such as

   a) solid mechanics

   b) fluid mechanics

   c) materials

   d) ...

There will be a regular meeting time each week with the first week (or perhaps two) devoted to introduction and logistics of breaking the class into lab teams. Then there would be up to four three-week sequences of: first week introducing the lab/demo to the entire class and the next two weeks dealing with the logistics of all the lab teams accomplishing the lab/demo.  Two undergraduate teaching assistants would be assigned to help throughout the course. The course will have a faculty lead, but it is anticipated that a team of faculty will actually help organize and implement the various lab/demos. Rooms available for the lab/demos could include: 021, 103, 109, and 104A Spencer Lab.

********************************

Because the change does move the credit from the sophomore to the freshman year, assuming this meets the approval of the Faculty Senate, the ME Department will offer an experimental version of the course, MEEG167, Introduction to Mechanical Engineering Labs, 1 credit, for Spring 2004 for the current freshman class.

Proposed - strikeout indicates changed MSEG course credits; shaded row is proposed course addition:
