a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or  deletion:

The ECE department proposes three changes to its Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree:

1.Require ELEG 490, Career Skills for Engineers (1 credit).

2.Reduce the number of Technical Elective Credits required from 21 to 20 by reducing the number of Technical Elective Credits that must be ELEG or CPEG from 15 to 14.  (We still allow 6 credit hours of Technical Electives outside the ECE department.)

3.Replace the required ENGL 301, Expository Writing, course with one from the following list:

ENGL 301, Expository Writing

ENGL 312, Written Communications in Business

ENGL 410, Technical Writing

ENGL 415, Writing for the Professions

The rationale for these changes is as follows:

1.ELEG 490 will provide our students with needed career skills, including an understanding of ethics and an appreciation for life-long learning.  It will also help the department maintain accreditation for the Bachelors in Electrical Engineering degree. This is a new course and is cross-listed with CPEG 490.  It is presently on the course challenge list and we anticipate no problems with its approval.

2.To  keep the total number of credits constant (at 125) we are reducing the number of required technical elective credits by 1. Most technical electives are 3 credits, but some are 4 and a few are 2 credits.  Students will be able to achieve exactly 20, if they so desire.

3.This change was requested by our students.  They would like more flexibility in choosing their second writing course. The English Department has approved this list.
