List program changes for
curriculum revisions:
Major changes focus on a rewriting of the Ph.D. degree
requirements. The changes improve the clarity of the policy, which is now
presented in a chronological ordering of milestones. The revised policy also
includes slightly modified Ph.D. qualifying examination procedures and a
requirement that Ph.D. candidates submit a Research and Study Program.
Additional specific changes are highlighted and described by side notes in the
attached document.
List new courses required for
the new or revised curriculum:
(Be aware that approval
of the curriculum is dependent upon these courses successfully passing through
the Course Challenge list. If there are no new courses enter “None”)
None.
Other affected units:
(List other departments affected by this new or revised
curriculum. Attach permission from the affected
units. If no other unit is affected,
enter “None”)
None.
Rationale:
(Explain your reasons for creating, revising, or deleting the
curriculum or program.)
The existing policy presented requirements in a confusing
fashion. Students (and faculty) reading the current policy were often confused
about the transition from pre-candidacy to candidacy and other related
milestones. Additionally, the structure of the Ph.D. qualifying examination
needed updating to be more efficient. In the updated policy, the written part
of the Ph.D. qualifying examination remains the same. The oral component
removes a paper presentation aspect and focuses on foundation courses (like the
written component) and current topics in the foundation course areas. Other
minor changes include clarifications on minimum course requirements and credit
transfers. Please see attached for a full description.
Program Requirements:
(Show the new or revised curriculum as it should appear in the
Course Catalog. If this is a revision,
be sure to indicate the changes being made to the present curriculum.)
[The description below is in accordance with the revised
policy. The only changes made from the current Course Catalog description are:
(1) the number of non-ELEG credits allowed to count towards the degree are now
correctly listed as 12 (the current description says six, which is not even
correct by the current policy) and (2) some minor wording changes have been
made.]
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREES
Master’s Degree - Thesis Program
The thesis degree program requires 30 credit
hours including at least 24 graduate course credits and at least 6 credits of
master’s thesis. The 24-credit course program of each student must include:
1. Six credits of foundation electrical
engineering courses.
2. Eighteen credits of advanced technical
courses related to the student’s area of interest. At least three credits of
these must be of 800 level electrical engineering courses and at most twelve
credits can bear non-ELEG numbers.
All candidates in the thesis M.S. program
will carry out original publishable research, most often in collaboration with
their advisor and others in the department, and prepare a written thesis.
Master’s Degree - Non-Thesis Program
This program is intended to satisfy the continuing
education needs of working engineers and recent graduates who want to broaden
their electrical engineering foundation before starting an industrial career.
Financial aid is usually not available to students taking this program. The
non-thesis master’s program requires 30 credit hours of course work meeting the
following requirements:
1. Six credits of foundation electrical
engineering courses.
2. Twenty-four credits of advanced technical
courses related to the student’s area of interest. At least six credits of
these must be of 800 level electrical engineering courses and at most twelve
credits can bear non-ELEG numbers.
Ph.D. Degree
Candidates for the Ph.D. degree must complete
the course requirements for the thesis master’s degree as outlined above, or
have been awarded a master’s degree in electrical engineering. In addition, a
Ph.D. candidate must complete a course program in his/her area of
specialization. All Ph.D. candidates in residence must participate in the
research seminar in their area of concentration and be enrolled in at least one
advanced technical course each regular term that they are not on sustaining
status. For the Ph.D., the University requires one continuous academic year of
full-time study as a residency requirement. The Ph.D. is a research degree.
Each Ph.D. candidate must carry out a program of substantial original
publishable research on a topic agreed upon by his/her committee and the
departmental Graduate Committee and prepare a written dissertation.
