a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or deletion:

For the last few years the Department of Chemical Engineering has observed that our undergraduate students have an increasing interest in minors within and outside the College of Engineering.  As currently structured, most students use their Technical Electives and Chemical Engineering Electives to fulfill the requirements for the minors.  In most cases both in the College of Engineering and the College of Arts and Sciences, the minor requires the completion of at least fifteen credits. In these cases, the available number and flexibility of these electives may be insufficient, and the student often needs to take an additional academic load during the fall or spring terms, or take additional courses in the winter or summer periods.

As a department, we want to encourage our students to obtain minors as part of their education at the University of Delaware, and we believe that we can facilitate this process by adding some additional flexibility to the curriculum.  Consequently, we request that the curriculum be amended such that instead of the existing division of Technical and Chemical Engineering Electives, the student should either take four Technical Electives and four Chemical Engineering Electives, OR take five Technical Electives and three Chemical Engineering Electives. This minor revision of the curriculum does not change the total number of credits for the major and does add the flexibility that students need to fulfill the requirements of minors in other departments.

b.  Summary of program:

Replace the existing descriptions of the Technical Electives and Chemical Engineering Electives by the following statement:

Take four Technical Electives (12 credits) and four Chemical Engineering Electives (12 credits) OR take five Technical Electives (15 credits) and three Chemical Engineering Electives (9 credits).  In either case the student must complete a minimum of 24 credits of Technical and Chemical Engineering Elective courses.  Of the set of Technical Electives, no more than 6 credits can be lower level technical courses (2XX or below) from a list compiled by the department.
