UAPP 862: Teaching
Practicum in Urban Affairs and Public Policy (3 credits, may be
repeated for up to 12 credits) |
In consultation with
a SUAPP faculty member and based on the student’s long-term goals and
professional background, the student participates in the development (or
revision) and teaching of a course.
The purpose of the practicum is to expose Ph.D. students who
anticipate teaching careers to the pedagogical issues, and planning and
implementation of course instruction. Tasks may include: literature searches,
syllabus development, lecture preparation and delivery, exercise/test
construction, grading, and student meetings as needed. Requires approximately
6-12 hours per week during a regular semester. Students register under individual faculty
section numbers. Permission is
required from individual faculty member responsible for supervising the
practicum experience, and the student’s academic advisor. Prerequisite: one semester of Ph.D.
graduate study. |
UAPP
861: Academic and Professional Development for Doctoral Students in Urban
Affairs and Public Policy (1 credit, may be repeated for up to 2 credits) |
This course provides
an opportunity for Ph.D. students to explore a range of topics related to
academic processes and professional development. Topics may include: strategies for
successful graduate study, advisor/committee strategies, topic selection, the research experience, writing skills, time/stress
management strategies, conference presentations, publishing, teaching, job
searches, professional organizations and networking. Guest speakers will include various faculty
members, students and alumni. |

Rationale:

Revision is in response to recommendations contained in
the Program’s Academic Program Review Report, as well as faculty’s desire to
strengthen requirements in research design and methodology, quantitative and
qualitative methods, and to encourage students to commence work on their
dissertation earlier in their program.
