a. Rationale for
creation, revision, or deletion:
The Department of Individual and Family Studies is recommending the revision of the Family and Community Services undergraduate major (human services concentration). The revisions are designed to improve the depth and breadth of the curriculum, to reduce duplication of course material among existing requirements, to update the program’s curriculum to keep it current with advances in the human services field, to ensure that the program is in compliance with the human service curriculum requirements of the Council on Human Service Education, and to broaden the appeal of the Family and Community Services major to students interested in pursuing a wide variety of graduate programs and careers that affect the well-being of families and their communities (e.g. social policy, community development) in addition to direct service careers in human services. All revisions can be accomplished without increasing the number of credits required for graduation.
b. Summary of program:
The Family and Community Services program (human services concentration) prepares students for careers in direct service, management and administration, and public policy. It also prepares students for graduate study in human services and related fields concerned with the well-being of families and their communities. The program changes do not require a change in credits needed for graduation. There are eight program changes. First, a new course, Family and Child Policy (IFST 402), will be required for majors. Second, in addition to learning about typical families, all students will be required to take a course about the needs of families with individuals with disabilities, by taking one of three existing IFS courses focusing on child and/or family issues and disabilities (i.e., IFST 270, IFST 463, or IFST 470). Third, students’ restricted electives will be reduced from six to four courses to provide a more selective concentration in the student’s individualized “area of emphasis” of study within their Family and Community Services major. Fourth, IFST 365: Seminar on human development and family studies will be required; it will provide students with instruction on contemporary issues in the field, which may vary by semester. Fifth, the maximum number of credits for the Internship (IFST 449) has been increased to 10 credits to reflect the actual number of hours spent in the field, which is in compliance with the Human Service Education accreditation standards. Sixth, the number of credits for the seminar (IFST 465) that is taught along with the supervised internship is being reduced from 3 to 2 credits to more accurately reflect the class time allotted for the seminar. Seventh, IFST 405: Impact of Aging on the Family will be included as an option for students to meet their developmental elective, thereby providing greater opportunity for students interested in aging to take a course dealing with that developmental aspect of the life span. Eighth, the courses meeting the CNST/Social Science requirement have been updated to better match the needs of the FCS students and changes in courses offered by CNST (CNST 100 (Leadership, Integrity and Change), CNST 101 (Understanding Consumers), CNST 110 (Seeing and Being in a Visual World) have been added, and CNST 235, 305, 310, and 335 have been deleted). Under separate course revision procedures, curriculum revisions are concurrently underway to existing courses (IFST 101, IFST 230; IFST 334; IFST 347). Also, a course is being deactivated (IFST 404); and a new course is being proposed (IFST 402).
