a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or  deletion:

We wish to make two changes to the required courses for the Educational Studies minor:

1.        We wish to delete EDUC 413 Educational Psychology – Social Aspect and replace it with EDUC 230: Introduction to Exceptional Children.

2.        Because EDUC 202, now a part of this minor, is being changed by the department to EDUC 205, we must change this course number in the catalog.

The reason for dropping EDUC 413 is that it is designed for secondary education majors who wish to teach academic disciplines in a secondary school. The course also includes an extended clinical experience in a secondary school, for which it is difficult to find placements. Furthermore, about 90% of the EDS minors have psychology as their major, and do not need more psychology. If they do, EDUC 205: Human Development: Grades K-8 is still available for them as an option.

We believe EDUC 230, introduction to Exceptional Children, will provide new information about children with disabilities unavailable to current EDS minors, which is particularly appropriate for the many students in the minor who go on to obtain graduate degrees in school counseling or school psychology. The small number of Educational Studies minors will not significantly impact the large enrollment EDUC 230.

The School of Education is deactivating EDUC 202 within the next few years due to program changes in the Elementary Teacher Education major. It is being replaced with EDUC 205, which combines the old EDUC 202 curriculum with the old EDUC 203 curriculum (both educational psychology courses).

There are no changes to the other 4 course requirements.
