a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or deletion:

The proposed change in department name from Consumer Studies to Fashion and Apparel Studies is the result of a reorganization of programs within the College of Human Services, Education and Public Policy. The Department of Consumer Studies is currently composed of majors in Apparel Design, Fashion Merchandising and Leadership.  The Leadership major and minor will be moving to the School of Urban Affairs and Public Policy, leaving two programs (Apparel Design and Fashion Merchandising) with a central focus of teaching and scholarship within the field of fashion and apparel. The programmatic focus of the remaining majors and scholarly focus of the faculty are represented in the new name: Fashion and Apparel Studies.

b.  Summary of program:

The Department of Fashion and Apparel Studies prepares our students for careers in the field of fashion. Relevant curriculums for undergraduate majors in Apparel Design and Fashion Merchandising address the design, pre-production, planning, promotion and distribution of apparel and related products.  Examining the social, psychological, historical and cultural influences on fashion, as well as providing a basic understanding of textile materials and production enriches our academic programs.
