a.
Rationale for creation,
revision, or deletion:
The creation of the major in Management Information
Systems is a cooperative effort between the College of Business & Economics
and the Department of Computer & Information Sciences. The Department of Computer & Information
Sciences is creating a complementary major in Information Systems. The proposed majors combine business and
information technology and are designed to satisfy the demand for students with
a combination of information technology and business training. The design of the majors is based on
feedback from industry, alumni, and other academic institutions. The industry feedback was gathered via focus
groups throughout the summer. Comments
from industry representatives repeatedly stressed the need for graduates who
had both information technology and business expertise. No current majors at the University provide
in-depth knowledge in both areas.
College of Business & Economics and the Department of Computer &
Information Sciences are collaborating on providing majors that address this
need. The major offered through the
College of Business & Economics is oriented toward students who are
interest in using information technology in the business processing to solve
business problems. The major offered
through the College of Arts & Science is oriented toward students
interested in the design of new software systems for business. The proposed curriculum leverages many of
the strengths of both the College of Business & Economics and the
Department of Computer & Information Sciences. These strengths include an outstanding business core curriculum,
unsurpassed technological expertise, outstanding faculty, and premiere
computing facilities. The attached full
description provides more detail.
b. Summary of program:
The program in the College of Business & Economics
will be housed in the Department of Accounting & MIS and a Bachelor of
Science: major Management Information Systems will be awarded. The program requires a total of 120 credit
hours, as does the existing Bachelor of Science: Major Economics that is offered
through the College. The proposed curriculum
satisfies all of the University’s academic requirements, including requiring
ENGL-110 and a multi-cultural, ethnic, and/or gender related course. In addition, students in this program will
gain expertise in oral communication through COMM-312 and additional written
communications in their choice of ENGL 301, 312, 411 or 415. The curriculum also provides breadth by
requiring 12 credits in each of Groups A: Humanities and B: Social/Behavioral
Sciences, students must also complete 18 credits of mathematics and science
courses.
The core curriculum of the Bachelor of Science: Major
Management Information Systems consists of required courses both in business
and computer science, leading to a capstone sequence (BUEC-431-432) in the
senior year. The business core provides the student with expertise in
fundamental business areas such as accounting, management, marketing and
finance and the professional concentration allows the student to specialize in
one key area of business. The Computer
Science (CISC) and Management Information Systems (BUEC) courses provide the
student with expertise in programming, networks, system development, and
database management. The capstone
sequence provides students with the opportunity to integrate their knowledge of
these disciplines by working on actual problems provided by industry and
business firms. The attached full
description provides more detail on the proposed major in Management
Information Systems as well as the complementary major in Information Systems
proposed by the Department of Computer & Information Sciences in the
College of Arts & Science and summarized on a separate Academic Program
Approval Checklist.
