a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or  deletion:

The department wishes to change the degree designation for the Management, Marketing and Operations Management degrees from the BSBA to the BS degree.

The BSBA degree designation is a historical relic that dates back to the time in which there was one major the Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with multiple concentrations in Finance, Management, Marketing and Operations Management.  Now that each of these is a separate major, and the Finance major is offered in a different department, the BSBA degree designation no longer provides a function.

Converting to the BS degree will allow students to double major across departments including other majors with the BS degree.  The general education requirements for all the majors in the department are consistent with the Bachelors of Science degree campus wide.

The impact is that students will no longer be admitted to the Business Administration degree.  Students will admit into the Department of Business Administration with one of the three majors offered in the department.  Students wishing the Finance major will admit directly to the Department of Finance.

b.  Summary of program:

See Attached Catalog Revisions

This change necessitates the following changes to the general description of the department undergraduate majors (Page 1 of attached catalogue changes.)

1.        The second paragraph is altered to change the phrase “Bachelor of Science in Business Administration” to “Bachelor of Science”

2.        Because the Finance students will no longer be admitted through the Department of Business Administration the reference to the Finance major is removed from paragraph 2.

3.        In paragraph 3 “Students seeking a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration” is changed to “Students seeking a Bachelor of Science Degree in any major within the department”

4.        Because students will now enter the department with a declared major the fourth paragraph of the old document is removed.

5.        Last paragraph “Accounting degree candidates” is removed because they are now by recent practice included under the clause applying to all “students whose programs require the [BUAD] course.”

a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or  deletion:

These revisions are the result of the normal cycle of reviewing and updating our curriculum.

The changes in required courses are designed to provide greater coherence and consistency in the skills that Management majors should have upon graduation.  Previously our capstone course has been a seminar in management in which the topic varied by instructor.  By moving the selected topics course to an elective and replacing it with two other required courses we are providing more consistency in the curriculum.  We have also replaced the required BUAD427, IT in Management course with a selection among three information technology related courses to better meet the needs of the students and provide more efficient staffing.

Re-titling of several courses better reflects the learning objectives of the courses.  These course changes have been submitted to the University Course Challenge list (see separate sheet).

We propose to require that students earn a grade of C- or better in all courses within the major and the quantitative course requirements.  This represents a tightening of policy from our previous requirement of a C- or better in all but one of the major courses and allowed a D in one of the Math courses.

This document shows the degree title as the Bachelor of Science consistent with the separate proposal to convert our degree designation from BSBA to BS.

b.  Summary of program:

See Attached Catalog Revisions  (Page 2 through 4).

The focus of the changes here are the required courses in the Management major:

1.        We have changed two course which were previously among a list of options to required.  These are BUAD421 and BUAD422 (renumbered and renamed from BUAD385 - this change is in the challenge list).

2.        We have changed from requiring BUAD427, to allowing a choice from among BUAD428, BUAD448 and BUEC427 (BUEC427 is now an Accounting and MIS department courses. It is being renumbered from BUAD427. This is under agreement with the Accounting and MIS department and is in the challenge list).

3.        BUAD429 Seminar in Organizations is no longer required, but is among a list of options.

4.        Among the list of options is two new courses which both have been taught previously under the BUAD429 course.  These are BUAD423 - Negotiation and Conflict Resolution and BUAD425 - Current Issues in Global Management.  Both of these are in the challenge list.

5.        We have reduced the professional electives from 6 credits to 3 credits to accommodate the increase in required courses (see page 4).

6.        We now require that all courses within the major be passed with a C- or better as opposed to the previous policy allowing one to be less than C-

Two incidental changes are included

1.        On page 2, we now require a minimum grade of C- in Math courses.

a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or  deletion:

These revisions are the result of the normal cycle of reviewing and updating our curriculum.

The changes in required courses are designed to provide greater coherence and consistency in the skills that Marketing majors should have upon graduation.  The Marketing Faculty strongly feels that every graduate should have passed either Consumer Behavior or Advertising.  Two electives have been added to enhance the program (one specifically for Honors students).

See Attached Catalog Revisions (See bottom of Page 4 through Page 7)

The focus of the changes here are the required courses in the Marketing major:

1.        We now require Marketing majors to take either BAUD471 or BUAD473.  Previously these courses were in a list of 5 other courses among which the student chose two.  Thus, a student could graduate without taking either.  This assures students will have had at least one of these courses considered essential exposure.

2.        We have reduced the professional electives from 6 credits to 3 credits to accommodate the increase in required courses (see page 6).

3.        We now require that all courses within the major be passed with a C- or better as opposed to the previous policy allowing one to be less than C-

Two incidental changes are included.

1.        On page 5, we now require a minimum grade of C- in Math courses.

2.        Years ago the BSBA degree was amended to allow literature courses in a foreign language to be taken as a Humanities requirement.  This was put into the catalogue, but mistakenly was put under only the Management major.  In practice it has for years applied to the Marketing and Operations majors.  We are merely correcting the catalogue to include the same statement under the Operations Management major (see page 5).

NOTE: The attached Catalogue changes include the minors and honors program statements.  There are no changes in these programs.  It is included here just for completeness.

a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or  deletion:

These revisions are the result of the normal cycle of reviewing and updating our curriculum.

New OM Curriculum

BUAD346              3 credits

BUAD446              3 credits

BUAD447              3 credits

BUAD448              3 credits

BUAD449              3 credits  (replaces ECON415)

This proposal is to slightly modify the set of courses that will be required for Operations Management majors.  The new set of courses is shown above.  The only difference between this new set and the old set is that we are replacing ECON415 with BUAD449.  At this time, we believe that including a Logistics course will benefit our students more than the current Economic Forecasting course.  Forecasting methods are already covered in other OM courses including BUAD306, and BUAD446 and will be covered in part in the new course, BUAD 449.  Thus, our students will still be well versed in forecasting techniques and models.  In addition, they will be much stronger in their knowledge of logistics and related models there.

Logistics is a very important OM problem today, as more and more firms are dealing with the problems and complexity involved with transporting their goods and services across the globe.  Upon reviewing our curriculum, we believe that our students should be offered more education in the area of logistics.  Since we can do this without taking away from their education in forecasting, we believe this change will better prepare our OM students to solve business problems in Operations upon graduation.

These new course has been submitted to the University Course Challenge list (see separate sheet).

Revisions (See bottom of Page 7 through Page 10)

The focus of the changes here are the required courses in the Marketing major:

4.        We have dropped the ECON415 requirement and replaced it with a new course BUAD449 - Problem Structuring for Operations Decision Making. (see rationale above).

5.        We now require that all courses within the major be passed with a C- or better as opposed to the previous policy allowing one to be less than C-

Two incidental changes are included.

3.        On page 8, we now require a minimum grade of C- in Math courses.

4.        Years ago the BSBA degree was amended to allow literature courses in a foreign language to be taken as a Humanities.  This was put into the catalogue, but mistakenly was put under only the Management major.  In practice it has for years applied to the Marketing and Operations majors.  We are merely correcting the catalogue to include the same statement under the Marketing major (see page 8).
