a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or  deletion:

Several companies, who currently sponsor students in the Alfred Lerner College of Business & Economics MBA program, have over the past few years asked if the college would offer a Masters Degree program in Organizational Development or Organizational Effectiveness.  Specific companies that have approached us include AstraZeneca, W. L. Gore and Associates, PSEG Nuclear, MBNA America, Uniqema, and Siegfried (USA) Inc.  As organizations face the need for continuing change, they have identified training in organizationally related skills for their middle and upper level management to address the continuing needs for change and development of their organizations.

While preparing our proposal we have conducted focus groups at four of these companies.  The focus groups have helped us refine our program and gauge the potential interest in this program.  These focus groups included 27 individuals across four companies at least half of whom reported being strongly interested in enrolling in this program.  We have also presented the program model to large groups of employees at AstraZeneca and PSEG Nuclear.  Following these meetings interest surveys have indicated strong interest from over 20 individuals.  We expect that in the first year of operation we would get at least 12 students enrolled in the program.  We also expect that within a few years, with minimal recruiting, we could reach a planned steady state of 25-35 students in the program.

b.  Summary of program:

The purpose of the MS in OEDC is to develop the necessary skills to be an effective agent of change in all forms of organizations. The student will learn the theory, methods, techniques and skills to influence change and develop organizations to maximize effectiveness.  The program is grounded in theory and empirical evidence, focused on critical and analytical thinking and methods of planning and implementing strategies in today’s complex, dynamic and global business environment.

Target population

The majority of students are expected to be mid-career professionals in business and corporate functions.  Most students are expected to have had some supervisory experience and be preparing for positions in increasingly responsible middle to upper management and leadership. Additionally, some students may be preparing for doctoral level studies in business, management, or organizational behavior/development, or preparing for careers as internal or external organizational consultants.  Students preparing for doctoral work should take a research focus with thesis option.

Skills developed through the program

Middle and upper management focuses on planning and implementing policies and programs to accomplish strategic goals within the firm.  As such our program focuses on translating strategic goals into operational plans and working with and through people to get those plans adopted and implemented.  Personal development focuses on formation of the self as change agent.  The change process depends on working with and through others, thus, there is a heavy emphasis is on leadership, influence, interpersonal, team and inter-group collaboration skills.

Structure of the program

·          Total of 36 credits

·          Traditional course structure combined with some condensed modules as appropriate for skill development.

·          Portions of the program may be cohort structure to stimulate learning from others.

·          Balance of structure for predictability and cohesiveness with flexibility to accommodate differing student needs.

·          Six credits of Professional Project or Thesis
