a.
Rationale for creation, revision, or deletion:
1.
Renumbering private study courses; change in credit total
The Department has renumbered its
private study courses, and the curriculum has been modified to reflect this
change. Private study at the Freshman
and Sophomore level is being reduced from 4 credits per semester to 2 credits
per semester, and private study in the Junior year is being reduced from 4
credits to 3 credits. This reflects the
equality of performance expectations for all Bachelor of Music students and the
increased expectations for Applied Music majors as they prepare recitals in
their Junior and Senior years. This
reduces the credit hours for private study by 10 credit hours.
2.
Addition of MUSC335 Basic Conducting and MUSC480 Vocal Pedagogy
These courses are being added in
response to comments from our most recent accreditation report from the
National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), in order to bring our
curriculum up to NASM standards.
Specifically:
The addition of MUSC 335 Basic
Conducting meets the following NASM requirement:
Students must acquire knowledge and skills sufficient to work as a leader and in collaboration on matters of music interpretation. Rehearsal and conducting skills are required as appropriate to the particular music concentration. (NASM Handbook 2001-2002, page 82, item VII.A.4)
The
addition of MUSC480 Vocal Pedagogy meets the following NASM requirement:
Comprehensive capabilities in the major performing medium including the ability to work independently to prepare performances at the highest possible level; knowledge of applicable solo and ensemble literature; and orientation to and experience with the fundamentals of pedagogy. (NASM Handbook 2001-2002, page 86, item VIII.A.3)
3. Replacing MUSC327 German Lieder
with MUSC 426 German Lieder
This
is a course number change only. The
justification is to allow us to have this course meet concurrently with a
graduate section of the same course.
This has been done with all of our other upper-division Music Literature
courses.
b.
Summary of program:
1.
Revise course numbers and credits for Private Study
(reduce by 10 credits)
2.
Under Music Theory: add MUSC335 Basic Conducting (2
Credits)
3.
Under Related Music Studies: add MUSC480 Vocal Pedagogy
(3 Credits)
4.
Replace MUSC327: German Lieder with MUSC46: German
Lieder (number change only)
5.
Under Related Music Studies: add Two of the following
courses: MUSC427 French Art Song MUSC428 Twentieth Century Art Song and MUSC426
German Lieder
6.
Change total for Music Electives to 6.
The added courses
will replace 5 credits of Private Study in the program. Song Literature electives (426/427/428) will
be moved to Related Music Studies, and Music Electives will be reduced to 6,
reducing the overall credits for the program to 130.
