a.
Rationale for creation, revision, or deletion:
1) Renumbering private study courses
The Department has renumbered its private study courses, and the curriculum has been modified to reflect this change. There are no credit implications for these programs.
2) Addition of MUSC275 Class Piano:
Intermediate I, and MUSC276 Class Piano: Intermediate II to AMI curriculum
Students in the Music Education Instrumental Major have been required to take two semesters of Class Piano (MUSC175 and MUSC176). The material in these courses does not advance far enough to provide critical skills in sight-reading and transposition. The addition of these two courses will meet those needs, and will bring the requirements of this curriculum in line with those of the other Music Education curricula.
3) Addition of MUED179 Freshman
Seminar in Music Education to all curicula
MUED179 Freshman Seminar in Music Education was developed in order to provide Music Education students with an early exposure to the issues and challenges of Music Education. It is important for students to begin their work in this program in their first semester, and for them to understand better the nature of their academic path. The course also allows the Music Education faculty an early opportunity to evaluate the student’s potential and suitability for the field.
4) Deletion of Art/Art History
requirement from all curricula
The Art/Art
history requirement was added with the understanding that students could chose
a Group A course and thus satisfy the remainder of their Group A
requirements. This has become harder and
harder to do, and students are forced to add an extra 3 credits to their
curriculum in order to take this course AND finish Group A. The faculty feel that the underlying
rationale for this course requirement—to have an aesthetic experience outside
of the field of music—can be satisfied by courses in the Group A requirement
area.
5) Substitution of MUSC407
Contemporary Music Literature or MUSC 331 Orchestration for MUSC 397
Contemporary Harmony (Piano and Vocal Concentrations)
MUSC397 is no longer taught, and much of its content has been incorporated into MUSC296 Advanced Harmony II. The remainder of the content is now covered by MUSC407. Students have been substituting MUSC331 for this requirement, and either this or MUSC407 is an acceptable substitute.
6)
Add Harp concentration (HARP) to XMI degree.
When the list of concentrations for
this degree was made, harp was not included.
We now have students who wish to declare harp as a major instrument, and
it is an important instrument for our growing orchestral program. There is no change in curriculum, and the
coursework for this concentration is identical to that for other orchestral
instruments.
b.
Summary of program:
1)
Under Applied Music: change course numbers (no change
in credits)
2) Under Applied Music: add
MUSC275 and MUSC276 to the AMI curriculum. This adds 2 credits to this program.
3) Under Music Methods: add MUED179 Freshman Seminar in Music Education (1 Credit). This adds one credit hour to each program.
4) Under Breadth Requirements,
remove Art/Art History Course. This
removes 3 credits from each program.
5) Under Theory: Substitute
MUSC407 for MUSC397 in the XMI and XMP curricula. No change in credit hours.
These changes reduce the total credit for all three degree programs to 130 credit hours.
DEGREE: BACHELOR OF MUSIC
MAJOR: MUSIC EDUCATION–INSTRUMENTAL
CONCENTRATION: PRINCIPAL INSTRUMENT
The concentration designates the student’s principal instrument. A list of instrumental options can be obtained from the Department or the College of Arts and Science Advisement Center.
