a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or deletion:

The major in International Relations is a multidisciplinary major that relies upon course offerings in departments outside of Political Science and IR.  Due to the retirement of a faculty member in Economics (and a topic that is no longer so relevant), ECON 305 (Comparative Economic Systems) and ECON 405 (The Planned Economies) – two course options for IR majors - will no longer be offered.  As a result of this, we are proposing to alter the requirements of the major slightly so that IR majors will continue to have choice among Economics courses in their concentrations.  Thus, we are proposing to remove ECON 340 (International Economics) from the core requirements of the major and to offer it as a possible course in the concentration or specialization.  The number of credits required for the major does remain the same.  Students will now be required to complete an additional Economics course in their concentration.
