a. Rationale for creation, revision, or deletion
I. The Masters of Music degree
with a Concentration in Composition is unique in that the highly practical
course work has been designed to arm the student with the composing/arranging,
recording, conducting, marketing, business and legal knowledge necessary for
succeeding in a career in the 21st century. It capitalizes on the expertise of
many current University of Delaware Department of Music faculty members, most
especially four-time Grammy winner Andreas Meyer of Sony Music Studios in NYC,
who has already placed UD students in internationally coveted Sony employment
positions, record deals and internships. Faculty connections to top tier
Eastern Board music ensembles (such as The Philadelphia Orchestra), and the
Department of Music’s own regionally renowned New Music Delaware
Festival, have already created unique educational opportunities for the UD
undergraduate composition majors. In recent years the number of undergraduate
music composition majors at the
II. The Composition Concentration differs from the other
Master of Music Concentrations in the following ways:
a) Students would take MUSC661
and MUSC 662--Advanced private study in composition rather than private study
on an instrument or in voice.
b) The three credits of electives must be chosen from one of the following:
Advanced Private Study: Composition (MUSC663), Advanced Arranging (MUSC631) or
Jazz Harmony MUSC697. In the other concentrations students must choose from a
600 level course in music or a course approved by a faculty advisor.
c) These courses are specific to the composition concentration and are not
found in the other concentrations: Recording Techniques (MUSC 684), Principles
of Music Industry Practice (MUSC688), and Chamber Ensemble: Still Breathing
(MUSC621--to be taken 3 times for 1 credit=3 credits total).
b. Summary of program:
The Master of Music degree with a Concentration in
Composition is designed for composers who wish to pursue a career in the field
of contemporary classical music, and for school teachers who wish to pursue a
graduate degree in composition and arranging. Students are required to complete
33 credit hours (maintaining a grade average of B or better) to be granted the
degree Master of Music: Composition. The course work includes advanced studies
in composition, arranging, conducting, recording
techniques, principles of music industry practice and ensemble administration,
