DOCUMENT  PREPARED BY J. WEHMILLER

This form is a routing document for the approval of new and revised academic programs.  Page 2 will serve as an attachment to the Faculty Senate agenda.  Proposing department should complete form, attach as a cover page and forward to the college dean. Documentation should include copy of curriculum as it is to appear in the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalog.  Proposals must arrive to the Undergraduate/Graduate Committee by November in order to reach the Faculty Senate by March 1.   Proposals received after this date cannot be implemented the following year nor included in the catalog for that year.

a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or deletion:

The creation of a concentration in Coastal and Marine Geoscience within the Geology BS degree represents one of three parallel actions being proposed to offer formal undergraduate curricular opportunities in marine science at the University of Delaware.  Another of these actions is the addition of a proposed Marine Environment track within the Environmental Science (ENSC) major, and the other of these actions is a proposed minor in Coastal and Marine Geoscience.  Both the proposed concentration and proposed minor will be administered within the Geology Department.  The Marine Environment track in the ENSC major will be administered jointly by Geography, Geology, Biology, and Marine Studies.*

These proposed programs represent a concerted effort on the part of several units to provide an opportunity for undergraduate students to study marine science.  The College of Marine Studies is interested in enhancing its undergraduate programs, and the A&S Environmental Science major (which already represents a major inter-departmental collaboration) provides an established format for creation of a Marine Environment track that will parallel the geological, biological, and atmospheric tracks that already exist within the ENSC major. The Coastal and Marine Geoscience concentration and minor provide a more focused opportunity for geologically oriented students to obtain marine science training.

There are frequent requests made by prospective students about opportunities in marine science, and these programs will make these opportunities available without requiring any new resources.

b.  Summary of program:

The proposed curriculum builds upon the existing BS Geology degree program and is modeled on other concentrations that exist within the geology major. The Coastal and Marine Geoscience concentration requires specific courses that are not required of other geology majors. These courses are: BISC 207/208 and ENWC/MAST 314, plus selected courses that have a particular marine or coastal focus (GEOL 431 and GEOL 434).  These latter two courses CAN BE taken by geology majors, but they are not required of geology majors.
