a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or  deletion:

The Physics B. S. major was revised last year.  It appears that at the April 12, 2004 meeting of the Faculty Senate, revisions to the Physics major were approved, but there was no discussion of the accompanying Honors degree.  I append an email correspondence describing the chain of events below.  We wish to obtain approval of the Physics B.S. Honors degree.  There is some urgency here as there is a student on track to graduate in the Honors program this May, and the degree has not been formalized.

The wording of the proposed Physics major is the same as that approved by Faculty Senate.  In the text on the Honors requirements, we incorporate some suggestions from the Honors program to improve the clarity of the wording.

b.  Summary of program:

The Physics B.S. major is appended below, and we are not proposing any changes to it.   Here is our (slightly revised) proposed Honors requirements:

HONORS BACHELOR OF SCIENCE: PHYSICS (All Concentrations)

The recipient must complete:

1. All requirements for the Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics

2. All of the University’s generic requirements for the Honors Baccalaureate Degree.

3. At least 8 of the 12 honors credits required in the major must be in Honors PHYS courses.  The remaining Honors credits in the major may come from related courses required for the major.

Note: Courses at the 600-level or higher in physics in excess of the 600-level courses required for the BS degree may be considered as Honors courses.

For comparison, here is the existing wording:

HONORS BACHELOR OF SCIENCE: PHYSICS (All Concentrations)

The recipient must complete:

1. All requirements for the Bachelor of Science Degree in Physics

2. All of the University’s generic requirements for the Honors Baccalaureate Degree.

3. At least 8 of the honors course credits must be in physics.

Note: Courses at the 600-level or higher in physics beyond the course requirements for the BS degree may be considered as Honors courses.

George, this needs to be tended to post-haste.  Apparently the revision

to the Physics Honors degree was not actually approved at the intended

senate meeting.  The urgency is that you have a student nearing

graduation on this track, but the degree is not formalized yet - and

needs to be by May commencement!  So please resubmit the request for

revision to degree, incorporating the suggested wording changes from the

Honors program as appropriate.  Please coordinate this with  Jama

Allegretto Lynch, Honors, and Cindi Shenkle, our assistant dean.

George,

Please coordinate this request with the Physics department. It will have

to be resubmitted to the Faculty Senate for formal approval. Thanks.

Bobby,

Here are the wording changes that the Honors Program suggest be made in

the description of the Physics Honors B.A. degree.  Thanks for looking

into this for us.

John,

It is clear that the revision to the Physics degree was approved by the

Faculty Senate. However, the Physics Honors degree was not. You note

below that the Honors program has some suggestions on the clarity of the

wording of the Physics Honors degree. Can you or Jama send me and George

your suggested changes. We will then request the Physics department to

submit the proposed Honors degree with your suggested changes to the

proper channels for formal approval.

Dr. G.

According to my records, the information for Physics, as given to me by

Helen Williams, includes the addition of the Honors Bachelor of Arts in

Physics and in Physics Education, as well as minor changes in the Honors

Bachelor of Science in Physics.  At the April 12, 2004 meeting of the

Faculty Senate, revisions to the Physics major were approved, but there

was no mention of the Honors degrees. I have attached the word document

given to me by Helen for Physics undergraduate. I received this

information during the second week of May (two weeks before the catalog

went to print) and had been told by Helen that she double-checked all

the information (for all the departments) against what had been approved

by the Faculty Senate and what had not. Due to the obvious time

constraint, neither I nor my assistant were able to check every change

against Faculty Senate records.  I can only surmise that when I reviewed

that Faculty Senate minutes and saw that changes to the Physics major

had been approved, I assumed that what Helen had given me was correct.

    Sarah,

Can you check your records on this matter? Please confirm if indeed

there is no Senate approval on this Honor's degree in Physics. If

correct, I wonder why it was submitted for printing in the catalog.
