a. Rationale for
creation, revision, or deletion:
The BS in Mathematics and Economics is
an interdisciplinary major administered by the
Since its first appearance in the
2000-2001 Catalog, the Program has graduated 8 students. In 2004 the Department of Mathematical
Sciences had 17 students graduating with bachelor degrees: 5 in Secondary Math
Education (BA), 4 in Math and Economics (BS), 4 in Mathematics (BS), and 4 with
a BA in Mathematics. There are currently
25 students pursuing a BS in Math and Economics, 7 of them are expected to
graduate in May 2005. The number of
students seeking that major has increased every year since 2000-2001. In 2003-2004 two students in this major were
awarded the Hutchinson Scholars
Program award from the
These awards corroborate the fact
that excellent students have been attracted to the major.
The BS in Mathematics and Economics
has been established with no additional cost to the University, and it attends
both the needs of students as well as the national need to train future
economists, specially those who plan on pursuing
graduate studies in Economics. It also
adds to the opportunities for mathematics students to get substantial exposure
to additional applied areas. Although we
have not kept track of all our graduates in this major, we know of one student
who is working in the Bureau of Statistics (Department of Labor) and pursuing
graduate studies at the
The program is working very
well. It seems wise to grant permanent
status to this bachelor program.
b. Summary of program:
