ACADEMIC
PROGRAM APPROVAL
CHECKLIST
This form is a routing document for
the approval of new and revised academic programs. Page 2 will serve as an attachment to the
Faculty Senate agenda. Proposing
department should complete form, attach as a cover page and forward to the
college dean. Documentation should include copy of curriculum as it is to
appear in the Undergraduate and Graduate Catalog. Proposals must arrive to the
Undergraduate/Graduate Committee by November in order to reach the Faculty Senate
by March 1. Proposals received after
this date cannot be implemented the following year nor included in the catalog
for that year.

a.
Rationale for creation, revision, or
deletion:
Our B.S. in Chemistry Program was
certified by the American Chemical Society in 1941. Subsequently, we created a CHEM Minor Program
in 1980, responding to student requests for same. (The centrality of chemistry in the curricula
of many of the majors at the University has made this a particularly attractive
option for many students (currently 90).
Our B.S. in Biochemistry Program was
created in 1989, and certified by the American Chemical Society in 2003. It is now the larger of our two B.S. degree
programs. Concomitantly, since its
inception, we have received an ever-increasing number of requests to create a
Biochemistry (BIOC) Minor Program. This
proposal, unanimously endorsed by the BIOC Division of our Department, our
CHEM/BIOC Undergraduate Curriculum Committee, and our CHEM/BIOC faculty,
represents our response to these requests.
We envisage two primary user streams
for the BIOC minor. The first will serve
the needs of the BISC majors, all of whom are already required to take
CHEM-103/104 General Chemistry (or its higher level CHEM-111/112/119
substitute), Most
of these BISC majors already opt to take (or are required to take) CHEM-321
Organic Chemistry (or its higher level CHEM=331/333 substitute) and CHEM-527
Biochemistry (or its higher level CHEM-641 substitute).
The second major source of BIOC
minors will undoubtedly come from the BS/CHEG majors, all of whom are already
required to take CHEM-111/112/119 General and Quantitative Chemistry and
CHEM-331/333 Organic Chemistry. They are
also required to take either CHEM-332 Organic Chemistry or CHEM-527
Biochemistry (or its higher level CHEM-641 substitute).
Realistically, we do not anticipate
that all new BIOC minors will represent new additions to our CHEM/BIOC
flock. Some would-be CHEM minors will
undoubtedly find that the BIOC minor better suits their needs; others will
attempt to satisfy both the CHEM and BIOC minors.
b.
Summary of program:
Biochemistry (BIOC) Minor
CHEM-103/104 General Chemistry (8cr)
[or CHEM-111/112/119 General and Quantitative Chemistry (8 cr)]
CHEM-321/322 Organic Chemistry (8 cr) [or CHEM-331/332/333 Organic Chemistry (8cr)]
CHEM-641 Biochemistry (3 cr)
CHEM-642 Biochemistry (3 cr) [or CHEM-643 Intermediary Metabolism (3cr)]
TOTAL: 22 credits (grade of C- or
better required for all courses)
[CHEM-643 is recommended in place of
CHEM-642 for those students who have taken BISC-401 Molecular Biology of the
Cell.]
