a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or deletion:

Voting on a recommendation from the Department’s Undergraduate Committee, the faculty last spring agreed that POSC 300: Data Analysis (required of all Political Science, but no International Relations, majors) was not necessary to validate a student’s “minoring” in Political Science.  While many students who minor in Political Science already have a required research methods course in their major field (for example, Criminal Justice and/or Sociology), our faculty agreed that other students (for example, from English, Philosophy, History, and/or Foreign Languages) who are interested in moving beyond the introductory level of Political Science and up to the requirements satisfying a minor should not be foreclosed by a methods course designed for majors.  It is true that in 1998 the Department decided to make Data Analysis a requirement for all POSC majors and minors.  We no longer feel that there is a sufficient academic reason why a student, who otherwise is willing to complete four substantive courses beyond the introductory American politics course, should be precluded from minoring in this field.
