a.  Rationale for creation, revision, or  deletion

MUSC 293, Jazz Improvisation I (3 credits), and MUSC 294, Jazz Improvisation II (3 credits) will  be deactivated.  These courses will be replaced by three two-credit private study and repertoire classes in jazz styles and techniques (MUSC 182, 282, and 283) which will join MUSC 181 and 281 already in existence for a five-course sequence of private study and repertoire classes in jazz styles and techniques.   The number of credits does not change and remains 21 credits for the minor.  The rationale is that the classes on Jazz Improvisation were not as effective as private study for students to develop improvisational and stylistic skill using jazz techniques.  Having five semesters of private study and repertoire class will allow students more time to focus on developing improvisational and stylistic techniques in jazz.

b.  Summary of program:

The Music Minor: Jazz Studies is a concentration designed for non-music majors who desire focused study of jazz and its performance techniques, and for music majors who wish a structured study of jazz which is an important aspect of a comprehensive education in music.
