REVISED
a. Rationale for creation, revision, or deletion:
1. Establish different specializations
within the Performance Concentration.
When the Master of Music degree program was
established, the concentrations (especially the Performance Concentration) were
designed to be generic, in order to serve the small student body the degree
attracted for the first few years. As the number of students in the degree
program grew, it became necessary and appropriate to designate various specializations
within the Performance Concentration.
The three specializations within the Performance
Concentration will be: Instrumental, Voice, and Conducting. Each specialization
will include the following core academic courses:
MUSC 611 Studies
in Music History (3 cr.)
MUSC 622 Materials
and Methods of Research (3 cr.)
MUSC 695 Advanced
Analytical Techniques (3 cr.)
In addition, each specialization will include two required
music literature courses addressing the relevant ensemble literature.
Instrumental and Voice specializations will include a pedagogy and literature
course; all three specializations include Private Study, ensemble performance, an
elective, and culminate in public performance.
2. Require three semesters of
Private Study for Performance Concentration Instrumental and Voice specializations
by adding MUSC 663 at 3 credits. Change the credits hours of Private Study 661
and 662 to 3 hours. This will result in a total of nine credit hours of
required Private Study, as opposed to the former eight hours.
Private Study is one of the most important components
in the Performance Concentration degree for instrumentalists and vocalists. In
order to make substantive improvements in technique, musicianship, and
knowledge of repertoire during the course of their degree program, MUSP
instrumental and voice students should complete three semesters of Private
Study. Students perform their Master’s Recital toward the end of their course
of study, and most enroll in Private Study through the semester in which they
perform their recital. Therefore MUSC 663 is a co-requisite with MUSC 601
Master’s Recital, and is repeatable up to three times for credit.
3. Strengthen the large ensemble
requirement for Performance Concentration (Instrumental) by adding one
additional large ensemble credit.
The majority of our instrumentalists in the Performance
Concentration candidates are full-time students for two years. They should be
incorporated into the life of the department - as well as provide a service to
the department - by playing in a large ensemble for two semesters. In addition,
large ensemble performance provides the student with unique learning
opportunities which individual practice and solo playing cannot match.
4. Create a new course for
Performance Concentration (Conducting) which reflects the different type of
culminating performance activities for conducting students, as compared with
instrumental and voice students.
MUSC 600 Master’s Performance in Conducting is the
conducting student’s equivalent to MUSC 601 Master’s Recital, but can be
undertaken after two semesters of Private Study (MUSC 661 and MUSC 662 at four
credits each.)
REVISED
5. Remove the word “Conducting”
from the specializations within the Teaching Concentration major. The three
specializations would then be: Choral, Instrumental, or General Music K-12.
This will prevent confusion with the Performance Concentration Conducting
specialization.
